Hyperthyroidism is a disease that affects many organs, such as the heart, kidneys and liver.  It is important that we perform a physical exam and labwork on your hyperthyroid cat at least twice a year.  This is to ensure that the medication is at the correct dose and to check for potential side effects from the medication

Medication Used: Methimazole (Tapazole)

Drug Monitoring:

-Recheck Serum Thyroid Level 2-3 weeks after starting medication

-Check Blood Pressure 2-3 weeks after starting medication.

-Every 6 months: Examination, Thyroid level check, urine analysis, Liver/Kidney blood check, Thyroid Level

-Anually: Examination, CBC/Chemistry Profile/T4/Urine analysis, Blood Pressure Measurement

**Cats that suffer from hyperthyroidism are at risk of multiple secondary metabolic disorders that are not visible to the owners or even on a regular veterinarian's exam. Periodic checks as described above are key to successful management of the patient.
